Building family in Nashville for men called to vocational singleness for the kingdom.
Mission
Vision
We pray that brothers would find stable, life-giving family in our community, serving as a physical embodiment of God’s love and drawing brothers deeper into relationship with Jesus. In turn, right relationship with God and right relationship with each other will empower us to leverage our singleness for the sake of the kingdom.
Brothers commit to vocational singleness: a lifetime calling to abstinent singleness for the sake of kingdom work with undivided attention. This includes permanently giving up romance and dating in order to leverage one’s availability to do kingdom work parents struggle to find the time, energy, focus, or financial freedom to do. Kingdom work is any work that promotes healing and flourishing in the world in ways that treat workers justly and use resources responsibly. Brothers will discover how God is individually calling them to use their work to build the kingdom.

Our History
On Monday, March 26th, 2018, eight men gathered for dinner, prayer, and to consider if God was calling us to start an ecumenical Christian monastery in Nashville. Over the next year, fourteen different guys joined us for weekly dinner, discussion of books about discernment or theology, and prayer about God’s call on our lives. In between dinners we performed miserably at Trivia, enjoyed the Nashville Symphony, and vacationed in Charleston, South Carolina together.
A year later, on Saturday, February 23rd, 2019, Jim Tablazon and Pieter Valk made one-year promises to the Nashville Family of Brothers, beginning their formal processes of discerning whether God was calling them to make the Family their family.
In the summer of 2020 the NFOB Pastoral Advisory Board was established to provide accountability and oversight from local pastors. In October 2020, Jeff Gustafson joined the community by making one-year commitments and Jim and Pieter made three-year commitments. The Nashville Family of Brothers celebrated their first family Christmas on December 25th, 2020. In June 2020, the Community Covenant of the Nashville Family of Brothers was officially adopted.
In November of 2021, we began our first cohort-style Exploration group with nine men exploring whether to move to Nashville and begin discernment. After ten months of Explore, Kevin Burgers and Andrew Ross moved into the NFOB House. Soon after, Hunter and Forrest made three-year commitments to the Nashville Family of Brothers, and James, Kevin, and Andrew made one-year commitments to the Nashville Family of Brothers.
We continue to meet weekly with brothers in Christ at different stages of their discernment with great anticipation of what God might do in Nashville through this Family.
Leadership
Internally, we are first led by NFOB’s Community Covenant, our constitution or contract. Every three years we will elect a group of Stewards to faithfully carry out the practices and principles described in our Community Covenant and provide leadership over the various aspects of our life and mission. These may include finances, recruitment, discernment, marketing/communications, community mission, accountability, community housing, and family rhythms. Externally, we have assembled an advisory board of Nashville pastors from a variety of denominational backgrounds to provide accountability for the Nashville Family of Brothers. NFOB’s Pastoral Advisory Board seeks to ensure that our Stewards are accurately applying our Community Covenant and resolve any disputes that the Stewards cannot. Advisory Board members meet quarterly with Stewards, pray for the Nashville Family of Brothers, and offer prospective brothers a pastoral presence in their discernment.
